As voted by the readers of Classic Drummer Magazine
Known as a consummate session drummer, the list of artists with whom Jim Keltner has recorded provides a who’s who of musical greats.
Even an abbreviated list includes icons such as Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Roy Orbison and Mick Jagger, plus timeless performances with the likes of Joe Cocker, Carly Simon, Crosby Stills & Nash, Steely Dan, The Ramones, The Bee Gees, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, Sheryl Crow, and Tom Petty.
Getting his start in fifties jazz, Jim was soon to play on his first hit with 60s pop group Gary Lewis and the Playboys.
The late sixties then saw his performances on Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and its accompanying movie enhance his visibility and led to him playing on John Lennon’s Imagine, Carly Simon’s Anticipation and Bob Dylan’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, among scores of other timeless hits of the seventies.
His busy career has seen him touring with Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band and handle drum duties for super group the Traveling Wilburys. After some 50 years of landmark performances and recordings, Jim Keltner remains busy today and is in demand as one of the world’s most respected touring and session drummers.
